The Community Foundation of Broward is excited to be a partner in Press Forward South Florida – a new collaboration rallying support for local news and information to ensure everyone has access to the local knowledge communities need to thrive.
At a time when our need to know is greater than ever, the news outlets we have long relied on – in Broward County and across the country – are shrinking. Changes in technology, advertising revenues, social media and a host of other factors leave us with fewer reporters to deliver the local news we need to stay informed about the communities we love. To tackle challenges head on and reach our full potential, communities must find new ways to support the local news we require.
That’s why we are teaming up with The Miami Foundation, the Key Biscayne Community Foundation, the Coral Gables Community Foundation and the Ocean Reef Community Foundation to launch Press Forward South Florida. Together, we are championing support to address news and information needs in each of our diverse and ever-changing communities.
We are part of a growing number of Press Forward chapters across the country looking for opportunities to bolster and grow local news in our communities. In addition to helping newspapers, TV and other longtime local news sources evolve to meet changing needs, Press Forward chapters support podcasts, social media, independent journalists, neighborhood publications and other news providers that have emerged in today’s media landscape.
Through Press Forward, we will engage residents, businesses, community leaders and others to support a greater investment in local news. New partnerships forged through Press Forward will spawn innovations that broaden Broward's local news ecosystem. And Community Foundation grantmaking – made possible by fundholders who step up to support local news – will invest in opportunities to inform and empower the community we love.
“Local news fuels understanding, builds a sense of community and – when necessary — empowers residents to take action for the community we love,” said Community Foundation of Broward President/CEO Jennifer O'Flannery Anderson. “As our local news outlets suffer from the national trend of diminished staffing and limited resources, support for Press Forward South Florida will strengthen and grow access to the quality local news that is essential to thriving communities.”
