The Broward Cares Disaster Recovery Fund has been activated in response to extensive flooding that stranded drivers and threatened homes and businesses across Broward County this week.
Broward Cares is a collaboration of the Community Foundation of Broward, Jewish Federation of Broward County and United Way of Broward County, which team up to raise money and deliver coordinated help where it’s needed most during times of crisis.
Already, Broward Cares is reaching out to local nonprofits with a survey to gauge how they have been affected by the deluge that dumped 20 inches of rain on parts of Broward and to identify ways to help the people they serve.
In addition, Broward Cares has provided nearly $300,000 in initial emergency support for nonprofits helping residents in the hardest-hit areas of Hallandale Beach, Hollywood and Davie.
How Broward Cares Works
Broward Cares provides a trusted and reliable way to donate to local storm recovery efforts, with 100% of donations directed to selected nonprofits that provide disaster recovery programs or support those in need.
First, the Broward Cares partners gauge the community’s top needs in the wake of a crisis by surveying nonprofits on the front lines of disaster response. Then the Broward Cares partners raise money and provide emergency grants to direct support where it’s needed the most.
All Broward Cares donations made to any of the partnering organizations are pooled and the partners collaboratively determine the most effective way to allocate recovery support. This ensures that every dollar donated is distributed fairly and equitably to address the community’s most pressing needs.
Emergency Funding and Support
After historic flash flooding in April 2023 disrupted thousands of lives by damaging homes and businesses in Broward, Broward Cares provided nearly $1 million in critical support to help our community recover. More than 40 nonprofits received emergency grants to provide housing, food, clothing, furniture and other essentials for flood victims. Broward Cares grants also helped restock food pantries, repair facilities and equipment for nonprofits serving flood victims and deliver aid for nonprofit workers affected by flooding.
In the wake of this week’s extreme rainfall, emergency funds have already been directed to Jewish Family Services, Lifenet4Families Project Stability, and Women in Distress, which are delivering essential services and support to those impacted by flooding.
