Mona Pittenger built her business success on lessons she learned growing up in a family of entrepreneurs. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Work hard to make the most of your opportunities. Inspire others with trustworthy leadership.
These dinner-table lessons of self-reliance and dedication during her childhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma helped Mona as she created a thriving real estate company. As a gay woman competing in an industry, at the time, dominated by straight men, Mona set a trailblazing example with both her personal success and her commitment to give back and empower others.
Mona’s philanthropy began with support for the LGBTQ+ community to overcome barriers to success. Seeking greater impact, she worked on charitable collaborations such as cofounding an art school for underserved girls. After retiring and moving to Broward in 2011, Mona became a founding Board Member for Our Fund Foundation, helping it grow into one of the nation’s largest LGBTQ+ foundations.
Now, inspired to do more, Mona is partnering with the Community Foundation of Broward to broaden the scope and amplify the impact of her activism. She is teaming up with the Community Foundation to create three charitable funds that empower people to overcome discrimination, achieve success and help the community thrive.
The Mona Pittenger Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Fund, the Mona Pittenger Leadership Fund and the Mona Pittenger Giving Fund launch an exciting new chapter in Mona’s philanthropy. Collaborating with the Community Foundation provides Mona an expert team to find innovative ways for her support to foster inclusion and break barriers, so everyone has a fair chance to succeed. She trusts the Community Foundation to lead her mission to cultivate and inspire future generations of leaders from all of Broward’s diverse neighborhoods. And while serving as a Community Foundation Board Member, Mona has seen firsthand the dedicated stewardship that safeguards and grows endowed funds.
For the first time during her lifetime of activism, Mona knows she has a partner to ensure her philanthropy will continue in perpetuity. Through the power of endowment, Mona’s BOLD impact will never end.
“I have tremendous faith in the talented people involved and engaged in this fine organization. The Community Foundation of Broward has a successful track record and a long history, so it’s going to be here. I also like the heart of the Community Foundation and the value this organization provides to our community.” – Mona Pittenger
