We are deeply saddened by the loss of Susie Levan, a Community Foundation of Broward Community Builder and former Board Member whose dedication to local philanthropy has made our community a better place to call home. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her husband, Alan, and the entire Levan family.
Susie's commitment to empowerment and giving back changed lives through the nonprofit she created, the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women, as well as her support for United Way, Women in Distress, Nova Southeastern University and many other local forces for good. Susie was the Publisher and Founder of Balance Magazine. She served on the Boards of the Broward Workshop, Broward Women’s Alliance and Speaking of Women’s Health.
In 2019, the Levan family was part of a groundbreaking commitment by BBX Capital – where Alan is Chairman and Susie's stepson Jarett Levan is President & CEO – to become the Community Foundation’s first corporate Community Builder. Community Builders are philanthropists who partner with the Community Foundation to create endowed charitable funds of $1 million or more. The first-of-its-kind BBX Capital Fund for the Arts provides ongoing support to help grow Broward’s vibrant arts community. It also established an example of giving for more local corporations to follow.
Jarett is also a former Community Foundation Board Member and his wife Dara Levan is a current Board Member. In 2023, Dara and Jarett established their own Community Builder Funds: the Dara and Jarett Levan Fund for the Arts and the Dara and Jarett Levan Fund for Mental Health and Well-Being.
We are honored to shepherd the endowed charitable funds that the Levan family made possible – ensuring that their support uplifts our community and transforms lives for generations to come. Susie and the Levan family will always be a treasured part of the Community Foundation's family.
