Working Together to Stop Cancer

A Community Foundation of Broward grant is fueling a cross-sector collaboration aimed at getting a promising new drug into the hands of cancer sufferers.

The $50,000 grant to Nova Southeastern University’s Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research (RGI) matches a gift of the same size from AutoNation.  With the match complete, researchers at RGI can begin testing a new, more effective version of a drug developed at the Institute to treat prostate, ovarian and colorectal cancers. Preliminary testing has shown the new version of the drug, called JFD-WS, is absorbed into human tissue more effectively, increasing its therapeutic potential. With Foundation support, researchers can now investigate if the new drug is safe to use in isolation and when paired with other cancer treatments.

The grant is part of the Community Foundation’s grant program designed to nurture innovative nonprofit projects that tackle pressing community needs. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States.
