BROWARD COUNTY, FL (March 2, 2016)The Community Foundation of Broward has received $20,000 from the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, a McCormick Foundation fund, to support the Foundation’s School is Cool work. The goal of School is Cool is to increase Broward high school graduation rates to 90 percent by focusing on middle school success.
The project focuses on the “ABCs” - attendance, behavior and course performance in reading comprehension and math. Strong performances in these three performance areas in middle school are established indicators of future high school success.

"The Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, a fund of the McCormick Foundation, is proud to support the great work the Community Foundation is doing with the School is Cool program. The goal of the Children’s Fund is to fund programs that help children and youth grades K-12 achieve academic success, complete high school and enter post-secondary education and the School is Cool program helps to achieve that goal," affirms Shannon Conness, Sun Sentinel Children's Fund Manager.

The Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund, with support from the public and matching Foundation funds, makes grants to local nonprofits to deliver well-rounded education programs for kids. Funding also provides nutritious meals and housing for those in need, as well as child abuse prevention and treatment programs.

"We’re proud to partner with the Sun Sentinel Children’s Fund to deliver what is becoming a county-wide model for middle school success," said Foundation President and CEO, Linda B. Carter. “Ultimately, the success of School is Cool relies on the support of all of us, including parents, teachers,  nonprofits, students, and engaged corporate citizens like the Sun Sentinel’s Children’s Fund."
