Plaque Presentation Honors 20th Community Builder

May 1, 2013

(Fort Lauderdale, April 30, 2013) – The Community Foundation of Broward Board of Directors today unveiled a new Community Builder plaque honoring Alvin and Gloria Ross’ gift of $1.5 million to improve the quality of life of people suffering from dementia in our community.
Alvin and Gloria Ross
Alvin Ross is a World War II US Air-Force veteran who, after being shot down over France, survived the war by crossing over the Pyrenees Mountains to Spain. Following his return to the United States, he built a successful modular home business and together with his wife Gloria, remained a strong community supporter.
With their gift, Alvin and Gloria joined the ranks of the Community Foundation’s 19 other Community Builders, philanthropists who have endowed a Fund at the Foundation with one million dollars or more to further its mission and provide leadership on community solutions.
“Using the Community Foundation of Broward’s local expertise, the Alvin and Gloria Ross Community Care Fund will help recruit and train caregivers for dementia patients, the disease that afflicts almost 15 percent of those over 70, and costs the nation more than the care of heart disease or cancer patients,” said Linda B. Carter, President and CEO of the Foundation.
Philanthropists such as Alvin and Gloria Ross chose the Community Foundation to endow their gift because it provides them the satisfaction of witnessing the change they make now, as well as the knowledge that their gift will continue to make a difference for generations to come.
The plaque was presented jointly by the Foundation’s Board Chair Wendy Masi and the President/CEO Linda Carter.
