Community Foundation of Broward Promotes an Increased Sense of Community through Arts

March 30, 2012

(Fort Lauderdale, 3.30.12)
– When people feel connected to their community, their satisfaction and engagement increases. That’s why the Community Foundation of Broward has announced the first grants as part of its $2.5 million Art of Community Initiative. Coral Springs Museum of Art, H.O.M.E.S. Inc., and Palms Community Action Coalition will share $157,000 to support three unique projects to bring residents closer together through common efforts to address issues of public concern through arts.
Each of the three projects will create stronger bonds between residents to reduce the community isolation and fragmentation that results from living in a county as large and diverse as Broward.
“We believe the arts have the power to bring people together through its universal language of expression. Our goal is to build a stronger sense of community that will result in residents working together in innovative ways to create solutions to local problems,” said Foundation manger of grants and initiatives, Nancy Rogan.
The Coral Springs Museum of Art will receive $67,000 for its Citizens Inspired by Art project for a modern day "barn-raising" to bring the community together.  Residents representing the diverse cultures of the city will be involved in the design and painting of a graphic on the water tower in Mullins Park celebrating the community’s diversity.
H.O.M.E.S. Inc. will receive a $15,000 grant for the 13th Street "Outdoor Gallery" Project  which will bring residents together to beautify, connect, and revitalize their community through art.  Residents from the 13th Street Corridor will work with artists to design and paint three large-scale outdoor art pieces in their neighborhood.
Modeled on a nationally recognized program, the Palms Community Action Coalition’s Creative Expressions Art Program will receive $75,000. This program will engage youth by challenging their creativity and equipping them with confidence-building media production and marketing skills, while promoting higher education and employability.
