Dr. Geoffrey Canada

(Fort Lauderdale, March 08, 2012) ─ “No one is coming to save your community’s kids! If you don’t do it, and do it by working together, then you will fail them.” That’s the message Community Foundation of Broward guest speaker and national education reformer, Dr. Geoffrey Canada imparted to 1000 participants at the March 7th 2012 Youth Summit.

Dr. Canada, the founder of the Harlem Children’s Zone, provided the keynote address at the Children’s Services Council’s Youth Summit and then attended a private Foundation lunch with local education and business leaders. Guests discussed ways to advance the Community Foundation‘s School is Cool Initiative’s goal to improve high school graduation rates through a focus on middle school success.

“What Dr. Geoffrey Canada has done with the Harlem Children’s Zone shows us that school success in any community, Broward, Harlem or anywhere, requires the entire community to embrace education as a priority,” said Linda Carter, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Broward. “By giving local leaders the chance to share ideas with the nation’s most innovative educator, we can begin to improve the critical and often forgotten stage of education – middle school.”

During his visit, Dr. Canada underlined the need to support students from early childhood through college and that to do so require the right leadership, a system of accountability to measure results, and community support.

“We have to get everyone - adults, schools, nonprofits and government entities on the same page and working together,” Dr.Canada said. “When we do that anyone can replicate our great results. It’s difficult, but it’s something every community can do.”

The Community Foundation of Broward’s School is Cool Initiative seeks to increase graduation rates to 90% by focusing on middle school. “What the research and our community conversations tell us, is that middle school success is not a focus of attention within Broward," said Carter.

"High school graduation success is built on middle school achievement because

dropout origins begin as early as sixth grade.  Dr. Canada’s visit is just one way we can bring this issue to light and help raise graduation rates in Broward.”

The Community Foundation’s private luncheon with Dr. Geoffrey Canada was sponsored by Berkowitz Pollack Brant Advisors and Accountants and Provenance Wealth Advisors.
