Duende Celebration

Broward 100: Celebrating the Art of Community

Broward is one of the most diverse regions in the country by almost every demographic measure. This rich diversity ensures Broward is a great place to live.  It can also fragment our population into disconnected pockets of different ethnic, cultural and economic groups. This isolation makes it harder to feel connected to each other and our community. Without these connections communities struggle both socially and economically.
One of the most effective ways to combat this isolation is through the universal “language” of art. Art provides nonthreatening opportunities for residents to work together and engage in their communities. The Foundation’s Art of Community Initiative supports such efforts.

Though a collaboration with the Broward Cultural Division, the Foundation is bringing engagement projects powered by art to every corner of Broward. Called, Broward 100: Celebrating the Art of Community, the partnership is a year-long celebration of Broward’s centennial. It will create hundreds of events and activities across Broward that use the arts to build community unity. The celebration concludes with a grand finale called Duende.  Duende will bring together Broward’s diverse and talented residents in a climax of art, culture, and entertainment from October 2nd until October 4th.

Definition: Duende (art); du•en•de noun\ dü-ˈen-(ˌ)dā\ a quality of passion and inspiration; a spirit; having soul, a heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity.
Art of Community is supporting projects such as Inside Out, which captures a collective message through headshots of Broward residents printed on posters, and pasted on 45 public spaces and archived online, this global platform allows people to tell their untold stories and transform messages of personal identity into works of public art.
