January 6, 2014

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – (January 6, 2014) – Broward Cultural Division and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau are proud to announce a unique partnership with the Community Foundation of Broward -- co-sponsor of Broward County’s Centennial celebration in 2015. With a $400,000 grant from the Foundation, the Broward County agencies will structure a 12-month celebration, Broward 100: Celebrating the Art of Community, with numerous events and activities that utilize the arts to strengthen communities and build unity. This grant is the first of its kind for these organizations and will focus on the power of art to bridge, bond and build communities.

“Broward County is a unique and wonderful place to live and visit," said County Administrator Bertha Henry. “Our diversity makes us a microcosm of our nation and world, and our Centennial offers us an opportunity to celebrate that diversity and strengthen our community by reaching out to connect with, understand and appreciate the art and culture of all our friends and neighbors."

Every element of County government will play a role in the celebration, said Henry, including Broward County's Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Parks and Recreation, Libraries and Transportation agencies.

The Centennial celebration will launch in October 2014 and culminate in October 2015, and is expected to unite the entire County through a series of preplanned and sanctioned events. The four cornerstones of Broward 100 include:
  • Inside Out, a visual arts project working with internationally renowned artist JR, that encourages communities to reflect their diversity in large-scale portraits that are exhibited in public forums, such as in murals and video projection;
  • A series of new public artworks that will create a legacy for the Centennial and pay tribute to Broward's past, present and future;
  • A yearlong program of Centennial events offered through County agencies, municipalities and community partners, which will be centrally located on a comprehensive, online Broward 100 calendar;
  • A large-scale culminating weekend event in October 2015, incorporating the creative minds of Broward County’s local talent, that will launch an ongoing annual signature event in Broward appealing to the global community.

“Our richly diverse community has much to celebrate on its 100 birthday, and what better way to do that than through the universal language of art,” said Linda Carter, Foundation President/CEO. “As Broward grows it becomes harder for all of us to stay connected with each other. Art builds bridges between groups, bonds people and communities and secures new partnerships in positive ways.”

The grant is part of the Foundation’s Art of Community Initiative to nurture civic engagement by bringing diverse residents, sectors and organizations together using the arts, which ties seamlessly into the focus of Broward's Centennial celebration.

Broward County is seeking additional sponsors for Centennial activities. Sponsor support will be used to Fund programming, marketing, professional fees and production costs associated with a series of events, exhibits and programs. Varying levels of sponsorship are available. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, email
