FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – (November 14, 2014)First ever documentary commissioned by the Community Foundation of Broward premiered today at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF). The film chronicles multiple art projects funded by the Community Foundation’s Art of Community Initiative and highlights the potency of art in helping Broward residents connect to their community and each other.

Several years ago the Foundation’s research on the issues that most concern residents concluded that many people felt disconnected from their communities and each other – they felt little sense of place and connection to it. The Foundation soon became a catalyst for the arts through its Art of Community Initiative seeding 46 projects totaling $1.2 million to elevate the arts to be recognized as essential to a vibrant community. Broward County has and other agencies have embraced Art of Community as the central theme for Broward’s centennial celebrations.

“The work is far from done, but projects such as those featured in the movie are the beginnings of a county-wide movement that you will soon see across Broward, now that the County and other agencies have embraced Art of Community as the central theme for Broward’s Centennial,” says Linda Carter, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Broward.

Several Foundation’s Fundholders present at the premiere were recognized with an award for their support of arts and Art of Community: Wilson B. Greaton, Jr. Fund; Huizenga Family Unrestricted Fund; Ginny and Tom Miller Fund; August and Melba Urbanek Fund; Rick and Rita Case Fund; Brogan Family Fund; Robert Elmore Family Fund; Linda and Michael Carter Fund.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Community Foundation of Broward, and the 100th anniversary of the community foundation movement that has seen community foundations around the world celebrate the impact of a century of community philanthropy.
