School is Cool

ISSUE
Only 53% of young people in America's 50 largest cities graduate from high school on time. Twenty-five U.S. school districts produce 1/5 of all U.S. dropouts. Broward is one of them. Research tells us that middle school is a fork in the road for school and graduation success or failure.

WHY IT MATTERS
When struggling middle schoolers become high school dropouts, they can expect higher unemployment and lower earnings; higher rates of illness and disability; and increased incarceration.

OUR GOAL
School is Cool aims to increase high school graduation rates to 90% by focusing on middle school success.

SCHOOL IS COOL 2.0
The new School is Cool 2.0 approach combines lessons learned from the past three years of implementation with new ingredients that make for a successful recipe to impact the ABC’s (Attendance, Behavior, and Course performance) in reading and math. With a strong partnership between the Community Foundation of Broward and Broward County Public School District, middle schools and nonprofits will work together to implement customized, innovative, and high quality projects tailored to meet the individual academic and social-emotional needs of the most struggling middle school students.

Participating schools: Attucks, Crystal Lake, Deerfield, Margate, McNicol, New River, New Renaissance, Olsen, Plantation, Rickards, Silver Lakes, Westpine, William Dandy

Participating nonprofit partners: After School Programs, Broward Education Foundation, Crockett Foundation, HANDY, Museum of Discovery and Science, OIC South Florida and Urban League of Broward County

Number of students: 642

Total Granted: $1,000,000
Community Convenes

Through School is Cool, the Broward School District saw an overall 2% improvement in math and reading comprehensions. What can your organization do to positively impact our students? Community Foundation of Broward will host a convening series to provoke conversations, spark ideas and uncover synergies on issues that matter in Broward. Stay tuned for how you can join us and help make our community greater. Stay connected with us on social media.
