The Community Foundation of Broward is excited about how Broward is becoming a more inclusive place for our LGBT neighbors as a result of nine forward-thinking nonprofits. Our support has fostered inclusion and acceptance of LGBT individuals, for example:

  • Homeless LGBT residents now have a safe place to live at Keystone Halls.

  • New LGBT programs facilitate dialogue among gay and straight participants at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.

  • LGBT families are happy to experience the Museum of Discovery and Science with its new inclusive efforts that include gender neutral bathrooms and Pride Family Days.

WE WANT TO SUPPORT MORE EFFORTS TO FOSTER ACCEPTANCE AND INCLUSION ACROSS BROWARD!

ISSUE

Broward has more same-sex couples or households than any other county in Florida. As our community and LGBT population continue to grow, issues arise and become more complex. The issues that affect Broward residents acutely affect LGBT residents.

Based on a series of listening sessions hosted by the Community Foundation, we learned LGBT residents feel confined and seek inclusion and acceptance within the entire community. But the broader community lacks sensitivity to their unique needs.

WHY IT MATTERS

The spirit of our community must always be one that accepts people for who they are and this includes the LGBT community.  For more than 34 years, the Community Foundation has invested in the quality of life for all in Broward.  LGBT residents deserve to live openly and be accepted without stigma or discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity and be a part of our community where all residents are greater together.  For full inclusion and acceptance to manifest in all areas of society, straight and gay people must unite.

OUR GOAL

To unite our diverse community to ensure equality, justice and inclusion of our LGBT neighbors throughout Broward.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

The Foundation seeks to catalyze institutional culture change within organizations to openly welcome and include LGBT residents. Think outside the box and submit your best and most creative proposal that will:
  • Increase LGBT access to and inclusion within programming at “mainstream” organizations to address needs and gaps in services for LGBT residents to create a culture of acceptance.
  • Make available safe spaces within the broader community where gay and straight residents interact and share experiences.
  • Reduce stigma and discrimination to promote equal rights, fair treatment and access to the same opportunities and benefits for LGBT residents as afforded to the “mainstream” community and create more straight allies
